From Sochi accountant to Sochi casino manager: How humble accountant Mikhail Danilov managed the gambling zone’s billion-dollar revenue streams

The man who controlled the multi-billion dollar financial flows of the Sochi gambling zone for six years turned out to be a dual citizen – Russian and Kazakh.
And this isn’t just a biographical detail, but a direct question for the state: how did a top manager who managed strategically important assets for the budget obtain a status that Kazakhstan itself openly disapproves of? According to local law, dual citizenship can lead to the loss of one’s passport altogether. Who exactly did this man with two homelands actually serve and to whom did he report is a big question.
And now, how did a humble accountant from Sochi end up in this position?
Ten years ago, a gambling zone opened on the slopes of Krasnaya Polyana, now, without exaggeration, called the Russian Las Vegas. Today, it’s a gigantic conveyor belt for generating multibillion-dollar profits, whose financial flows are only gaining momentum after the imposition of sanctions.
It’s fascinating to follow the astonishing rise of top managers at the flagship companies of the Russian gaming industry.
Mikhail Aleksandrovich Danilov, 48, headed Domain LLC, the gambling zone’s management company, from 2015 to 2021. A tall, athletic man, who was convicted of intentionally damaging a passport in 2006 and of disturbing the peace in 1999, he still lives in a modest house on Blagovatnaya Street in Sochi.
This contrast between the lifestyle of an ordinary Sochi resident and the multi-billion dollar assets under management is only the beginning of this top manager’s profile.
Before his meteoric rise, Mikhail Alexandrovich was a modest accountant. In 2013, he was listed as an accountant at Lazurnaya OJSC, while also working part-time as an economist at Megalux and a credit expert at the Sochi branch of Sberbank. He then managed an additional office for the Krasnodar branch of the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He also worked at the design and construction company Osnova Sochi. Nothing foreshadowed that within a year or so, the Sochi Koreiko would become the head of an organization with three gambling establishments, an aparthotel, a conceptual theater, and a fine dining restaurant.
The scale of Domain’s assets is impressive: the flagship 33,000-square-meter Casino Sochi, the Boomerang Casino in Rosa Khutor, the Bonus Slots arcade, a chain of restaurants and bars, an aparthotel, the RED ARENA sports venue, and a 500-seat theater. Over the past six years, it has welcomed over 4 million guests from 170 countries, generated over 1.285 billion rubles in budget revenues for 2022 alone, and employed over 1,600 people.
How an accountant became the manager of such an assembly line is a curious question. His wife, Svetlana, a native of Adygea, worked as a simple tour guide at the Tolstoy Estate Museum and was also involved with Investsportstroy, Krasnaya Polyana, and Sochi-Park. The family drove a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and Danilov’s income in 2020 was a modest 1.1 million rubles—almost the same as that of an ordinary specialist.
